Longtime Kings fan Kayla Hicks tips-off her first Kings.com blog by taking a look at hot topics among fans online.
Hey, Kings fans!
As a diehard purple-and-black supporter and frequent co-host of Kings.com Live Chats, I’m thrilled to start a blog this season.
Throughout the 2012-13 campaign, I aim to provide a unique perspective on some of the most-discussed team topics driven by fan conversations across Kings social media platforms – including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – as well as our great game night live chats.
This season marks my fourth in which I’ve actively participated in Kings.com Live Chats, which aim to provide a fun and informative in-game experience and serve as a place to interact with fellow Kings fans from all over the world. Throughout each contest, participants discuss all the action as it happens, receive key game information and have a chance to get real-time assistance with any Kings-related questions – it’s like transforming one’s home into a seat in the stands and getting to share it with fans who are equally as passionate about our team! Over the years, we’ve become a family of sorts, and I invite everyone to join us for every Kings game throughout the season.
Like you, after reading and watching the team grow closer over the last month, I’m excited the regular season is underway and I have the chance to expand on the numerous exchanges I’ve shared with excited and optimistic Kings fans.
Kings Hot Topic: Blackout Home Opener
As with all sporting events, the first home game of the season is always special. The new season brings excitement about new players, new hopes for the season, and an overall sense of joy for basketball to be back. Monday night’s game was no disappointment for Kings fans.
I didn’t wake up with a case of the Monday Blues, since it was “Blackout” Monday. The day I’d been anxiously awaiting had finally arrived. There’s something special about a “Blackout” game – the environment completely changes. It’s something you notice the moment you pull into the parking lot at Sleep Train Arena. The anticipation builds as you stand in line, waiting to get in as the sounds of ringing cowbells and chanting fans abound before the doors are even open. Once you’re inside and mingling with Kings fans, the excitement reaches its peak. The moment the lights go out and you hear the unmistakable voice of Scott Moak delivering his signature lead-in to player introductions – “And now, ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to meet tonight’s starting five for your Sacramento Kings!” – the crowd erupts in a symphony of cheers.
As has been the case in the past several matchups between Sacramento and Golden State, the Home Opener came down to the wire. Many fans were wondering if they were going to see a fourth overtime game in the pair’s last seven meetings. While overtime is a thrilling experience – especially live – fans were hoping the Kings would win in the final seconds of regulation. The Kings did just that, sealing a hard-fought 94-92 victory.
The rivalry between the two squads certainly doesn’t disappoint, often leaving both fanbases on the edge of their seats.
Kings Hot Topic: T-Rob
Scanning through Kings-related comments on Facebook, I’ve come across countless fans who are extremely excited about Thomas Robinson. Like the rising stars the Kings drafted before him, he comes to Sacramento with great expectations, but a lot of fans have been wondering just how his game will translate from college to the NBA.
The rookie quickly made his presence felt during preseason games, most notably posterizing Dwight Howard during Sacramento’s 99-92 preseason win over the Lakers on Oct. 21. What has come as an even more welcomed sight, however, is his aggressiveness on the defensive end. He’s a great young player who’s willing to learn and get better, and I’m looking forward to watching him grow as an all-around player – not to mention countless more highlight-reel dunks!
The addition of the 6-foot-10 Kansas product has also added a legion of Jayhawk fans to the continuously growing Sacramento fanbase – to all KU Kings fans, as well as any additional new fans, we’re glad to have you aboard in what should be a fun Kings season!
Kings Hot Topic: Brooks
Since Aaron Brooks first donned a Kings jersey during October preseason games, Kings.com Live Chats have been abuzz with questions and observations about No. 3’s game.
Joining Tyreke Evans, Isaiah Thomas, and Jimmer Fredette in Sacramento’s backcourt, from what I’ve seen and read, No. 3’s experience, playmaking ability and court vision will help him thrive on-court and improve the Kings.
In his fifth year as a professional basketball player, the Oregon alum brings a much-needed veteran presence to this young Kings squad. He has shown the ability to connect with younger teammates, as well as gain respect from seasoned veterans, including Francisco Garcia – especially after his gutsy choice to stay in the game after getting his front tooth knocked out in Chicago.
Kings Hot Topic: Team Bonding
Entering training camp, one of the biggest questions on Twitter centered on how well the new team would play together. Meanwhile, in his first full year at the helm, Kings Head Coach Keith Smart has emphasized the importance of teamwork.
In a sign that the team is in-tune with their coach’s mantra, new addition James Johnson recently said, “We just want to win—it’s not about one person.”
And DeMarcus Cousins echoed his leader’s and teammate’s remarks when he added, “Building chemistry early on will help this team out a lot.”
Although it’s still early in the season, I think we’ve seen a definitive answer regarding the team’s cohesion play out through October and into November, which is emphasized by the Kings concluding huddles by shouting, “Family!”
