First-year Sacramento Kings Dancer Roxanne shares a fun practice anecdote and dishes on her favorite performances, healthy-living tips and more.
Hey, Kings fans! I hope you’re all doing well, and I’m excited to share some exciting updates.
I’ve had a lot of fun during the first half of the season, while also picking up a lot of insight. Most importantly, I’ve learned the importance of always keeping up in practice, because it’s even more difficult if you happen to fall behind – especially as a rookie.
I feel even closer to all of the dancers, whom I consider my sisters, and even though we work extremely hard, we share plenty of laughs. A couple of nights ago, we were wearing socks in practice while learning a new jazz routine created by Isela. As I prepped for my jump, my bottom foot slipped from under me and I landed straight on my side! As I realized I was falling, I yelled, “Nooooo!” in slow motion. All the girls saw me, fortunately I was OK, and we couldn’t stop giggling.
At our last home game, we debuted two brand-new routines. I was a little nervous because we learned them only a week prior to performing, but everything went great and the crowd loved them. One was called “Danger,” which is more of a vogue, jazz routine, while the other is a really fun, up-beat hip-hop dance created by Tammier.
Also, over the weekend, we went to San Ramon for minicamp with the Warrior Girls, which was a blast! We learned a bunch of fresh, new routines, which we’ll show off during our upcoming games.
A couple of weeks ago, we had ‘90s Night at Sleep Train Arena, which was one of my favorite games of the year. We put our hair in side ponytails and dressed up in throwback gear. It was a flashback for SKD, because most of us grew up during the decade. We even had ‘90s music, including a lot of TLC hits, playing in our locker room while we were getting ready.
I loved performing “Macarena,” as well. I actually spotted a group of my friends in the crowd, along with a few girls, and went up to them and danced while we are all shown on KingsVision. It was so much fun!
We recently made an appearance at a Get Fit Rally for kids at an elementary school by Rosemont. We shared the health benefits of getting just 30 minutes of exercise daily. The kids had a lot of fun and were so loud I had to put my hands over my ears every time they screamed! All in all, we had an amazing time performing, giving away prizes and watching them show us their dance and basketball moves.
I haven’t gone out to see many new movies lately, but I’ve rented a lot of DVDs from Redbox. The last one I saw was “Project X,” which I enjoyed.
Otherwise, I’ve mostly watched reality TV shows at home. Some of my favorites are “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” “Kourtney & Kim Take Miami,” “Vanderpump Rules” and “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.” My roommate also records “Family Guy,” and I watch it a lot with her.
In addition to perfecting my jazz dance technique, I’m hoping to go back to school soon at Sierra College. I took a break this season because we’ve been working almost every day from the beginning of the season, but going forward, I think I’ll be able to keep up and attend classes, as well.
Thanks as always for checking out my blog, and I’ll keep you posted with more updates soon.
