Podcast: Malone Talks Team Identity & More

Check out excerpts and listen to Head Coach Michael Malone’s recent conference call with Cap City Kingdom Members.

On Tuesday, thousands of Cap City Kingdom Members were called to join Head Coach Michael Malone on a 30-minute conference call, during which the team’s leader provided valuable insight into his defensive and offensive philosophies, Draft processes, coaching staff plans and much more.

During the conversation, Malone revealed he recently spent time with San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh at the NFL squad’s training facility and gained inspiration from a sign posted outside of the practice field.

“There’s a big sign the players can’t ignore – it’s right there in their faces – and the sign simply says, ‘You’re either getting better or you’re getting worse – you never stay the same,’” Malone shared with Debbie, a seven-year Cap City Kingdom Member, regarding areas his team needs to improve. “I believe that … it’s a collective unit (and) we all have to get better.”

Addressing a question posed by Verne – a Cap City Kingdom Member since 2000 – regarding Sacramento’s offense, the head coach explained he plans to utilize the team’s youth and speed to play an up-tempo style, emphasizing continuous effort on both ends of the court.

“In order for us to be a better transition team – a team that can get out and play an exciting style – it starts with defense,” said Malone. “It starts with rebounding,”

After the June 27 Draft, Malone expects to work closely with General Manager Pete D’Alessandro to explore free-agency options, prior to getting integrated with the Kings Summer League Team, which will tip-off action on July 13 in Las Vegas.

“I’m going to tell a lot of our veteran players to come out to Vegas because it will be a great opportunity for them to see me and my staff working with our players and (get) a snapshot of what to expect,” said Malone.

“My hope is, come September, after Labor Day, to have as many guys back here in our gym … working on player development, working on introducing some of our defensive drills, so now, when training camp starts in the beginning of October, we’re going to hit that ground running.”
